The upcoming Korean film Hijacking is said to be inspired by real-life events.
Hijacking tells the story of people fighting for their lives in a difficult situation when a passenger plane is hijacked in Korean airspace in 1971. The Korean film stars Ha Jung-woo, Song Dong-il, Yeo Jin-joo, and Chae Soo-bin.
Hijackings peaked between 1968 and 1972, with a total of 325 incidents occurring over five years (according to US Federal Aviation Administration statistics). Then, strengthening security measures led to a decrease in kidnapping incidents. In January 1971, a passenger plane departing from Sokcho Airport bound for Gimpo Airport was hijacked. Inspired by such real-life events, “Abduction” vividly depicts the intense struggles of the people on board the ship amid harsh conditions.
Ha Jung Woo commented, "I first learned that something like this had happened through the Hijacking scenario, and I was amazed that such a dramatic incident could actually happen. The beginning of the story is based on a real incident, and the movie also promises fun. And suspense."
Director Kim Sung Han said, "When I heard the story of the 1971 plane hijacking, I thought this was an extraordinary story without parallel in the world. I thought there would be many things we could do by turning this [incident] into a movie."
